Sample Questions

Guidelines

Before the test

・Silent answers (no answers) will not be scored.
Try to speak as much as possible, using vocabulary and grammar that you are familiar with.
・When answering, keep the following points in mind so that the evaluation will be scored appropriately.
- ① Logic: Consider the logical structure of your answer. (e.g.: main point --> supporting facts --> examples)
- ② Vocabulary and Grammar: Be sure to use a wide range of words and the correct sentence structure.
- ③ Pronunciation and Intonation: Try to speak clearly without unnatural pauses.
・ The test is delivered in an automated audio format, but you should speak naturally as if you were actually speaking to a person.
・ Use the environmental check test before taking the test to check the recorded volume and clarity of your voice.

Test structure (5 parts in total)

Part 1: InterviewAnswer ten (10) short questions within 20 seconds per question.
Part 2: Reading AloudRead the eight (8) sentences individually, loudly and clearly.
Part 3: PresentationGive a presentation on a given topic. Additionally, three main requirements are presented after the given topic in advance that needs to be included in the presentation.
Part 4: Graphic PresentationDescribe what information you can see in the graphic.
Part 5: Communication ActivityAnswer the audio prompts as if you are having a conversation with the prompts.

Part 1 Interview

Contents of Questions: One (1) answer per question. You have 20 seconds to answer each question in English.

Preparation time: None
Response time: 20 seconds each

Assessment points: To evaluate the overall appropriateness and quality of the responses.

Answer Tips: In Part 1, there is no written information (visually), so you have to immediately answer the questions one after another. Listen carefully to the audio, and even if you don't understand exactly what is being asked, try to give a response based on parts of the question that you do understand.

Step 2

When you hear a beep (sound), answer the question within 20 seconds.
This will be repeated for all 10 questions.※The questions are audio only, so the questions are not displayed.

Part 2 Reading Aloud

Contents of Questions: Read aloud the displayed sentence.
The sentence is displayed→ read aloud. This process is repeated eight (8) times.

Number of questions, preparation time and response time: Number of sentences: Eight (8) sentences
Preparation time: None
Response time: 10 seconds each

Assessment points: To evaluate whether you are able to pronounce the words in a way that the listener can clearly understand.

Answer Tips: In Part 2, you will be asked to read sentences that are displayed visually. Read each sentence aloud and clearly, while paying attention to your intonation and stress.

Step 2

An English sentence will appear on the screen. After the beep (sound) read the sentence out loud within 10 seconds.
Repeat this process for all eight (8) sentences.※There is no audio as the sentences are displayed.

Part 3 Presentation

Contents of Questions: Talk about the given topic. You will need to meet the requirements as specified.

Number of questions, preparation time and response time: Number of questions: One (1) question
Preparation time: 40 seconds
Response time: 60 seconds

Assessment points: To evaluate how you present an extended explanation.

Answer Tips: In Part 3, you will be asked to think about several points in relation to the given topic and answer them in your own way and in details. Use the audio and written information to provide answers that cover the given topic and the additional criteria. The question measures your ability to use a variety of language to perform the tasks, so try to imagine and answer the questions, even if you have no prior experience.

Part 4 Graphic Presentation

Contents of Questions: Explain what is presented in the graphic.

Response time: 60 seconds

Assessment points: To evaluate the accurate and factual presentation of the graphic in detail.

Answer Tips: Part 4 is a verbal explanation of information shown in the graphic. Describe accurately what the graphic shows and what information you can read or infer from it.

Part 5 Communication Activity

Contents of Questions: You will engage in several conversational exchanges (prompts) related to the given topic.

Number of questions, preparation time and response time: Number of questions: One (1) question (including topic related points to consider)
Preparation time: 40 seconds
Response time: 30 seconds per answer

Assessment points: To evaluate speech in situations where interaction occurs, rather than one-way speech.

Answer Tips: Part 5 is a series of simulated conversations about a topic. The first step is to read the text and listen to the main points to consider during the the conversation, then prepare your answer. After each prompt is played, answer it immediately after the beep (sound). As with Part 3, this also measures your ability to use language to perform tasks, so try to imagine and answer the questions, even if you have no prior experience of the situation. If a single question contains multiple parts, make sure to answer as many parts as possible.
