Sample Questions

Guidelines

Before the test

  • ・Silent answers (no answers) will not be scored.
    Try to speak as much as possible, using vocabulary and grammar that you are familiar with.
  • ・When answering, keep the following points in mind so that the evaluation will be scored appropriately.
    • ① Logic: Consider the logical structure of your answer. (e.g.: main point --> supporting facts --> examples)
    • ② Vocabulary and Grammar: Be sure to use a wide range of words and the correct sentence structure.
    • ③ Pronunciation and Intonation: Try to speak clearly without unnatural pauses.
  • ・ The test is delivered in an automated audio format, but you should speak naturally as if you were actually speaking to a person.
  • ・ Use the environmental check test before taking the test to check the recorded volume and clarity of your voice.

Part 1 Interview

Contents of Questions
One (1) answer per question. You have 20 seconds to answer each question in English.

To evaluate the overall appropriateness and quality of the responses.
Answer Tips
In Part 1, there is no written information (visually), so you have to immediately answer the questions one after another. Listen carefully to the audio, and even if you don't understand exactly what is being asked, try to give a response based on parts of the question that you do understand.

Part 2 Reading Aloud

Read aloud the displayed sentence.
The sentence is displayed→ read aloud. This process is repeated eight (8) times.

To evaluate whether you are able to pronounce the words in a way that the listener can clearly understand.

In Part 2, you will be asked to read sentences that are displayed visually. Read each sentence aloud and clearly, while paying attention to your intonation and stress.

To evaluate how you present an extended explanation.

In Part 3, you will be asked to think about several points in relation to the given topic and answer them in your own way and in details. Use the audio and written information to provide answers that cover the given topic and the additional criteria. The question measures your ability to use a variety of language to perform the tasks, so try to imagine and answer the questions, even if you have no prior experience.

To evaluate speech in situations where interaction occurs, rather than one-way speech.
Answer Tips
Part 5 is a series of simulated conversations about a topic. The first step is to read the text and listen to the main points to consider during the the conversation, then prepare your answer. After each prompt is played, answer it immediately after the beep (sound). As with Part 3, this also measures your ability to use language to perform tasks, so try to imagine and answer the questions, even if you have no prior experience of the situation. If a single question contains multiple parts, make sure to answer as many parts as possible.
